Cupping
Cupping is a physical therapy that is often used as part of an acupuncture treatment. The practitioner creates a vacuum in a glass cup, which is then placed onto the skin. The vacuum then gently draws the skin and causes increased circulation to the area.
Does it hurt?
No. Having cups on your back, your abdomen or other area of the body is usually a pleasant experience. Your practitioner will check with you to see if you have any discomfort. Sometimes cupping can leave marking on the skin that looks similar to bruising, however these are typically not painful - but very exciting for others to see!
How long will the marks be there for?
The marking usually disappears within a few days, depending on the level of discolouration. The colour that is produced from having cupping done can be used diagnostically and your practitioner can tell you more about this once the cup is removed. Patients with a lot of toxicity or localised muscle tightness can sometimes have very dark coloured marks that can take a week or more to clear.
Where do you put the cups?
Cupping is most often performed on the back or on the abdomen, but virtually any area of the body can be cupped.
